In praise of unsung IT heroes!

So true Michael Krigsman, for all we put them through - the same questions over and over, problems that could have been avoided if only we'd listened, the calls and emails - we're lucky we still have our trusty IT Admins. Indeed we must remember that IT is often understaffed and over-worked, and folks in the trenches are just trying to do a good job.

Most important IT roles ranked

I really enjoyed this article by Tony Kontzer. He’s reporting on a recent Forrester Research survey in which 128 IT decision makers were asked about their changing staffing needs.

All of you generalists take note: “The age of IT specialization is dead, replaced by an emphasis on skills that can translate across the enterprise.”

I am of the opinion that many specialists are naturally transitioning to a more general role as they adapt to their organization’s evolving IT needs. Security, Project Management, Architecture and IT Strategy and Business Management top the list of most important IT roles. IT Research and Asset Management were at the bottom. the quest for canada's smartest it department

Here's a great opportunity to show how you've used IT in a really smart or green way.

"In May of 2010 Info-Tech Research Group and the Quest for Canada’s Smartest IT’s sponsors will review applications from companies who have nominated  themselves or been nominated to select those that qualify as the Smartest IT and/or Greenest IT. The criteria for selection will be based on the stories shared about how they have sustained innovation, provided solutions allowing for their organization to operate smarter or greener, and the ‘Wow’ factor that sets their use of IT apart from the competition. A select group of finalists will be chosen and an independent panel will meet with them to select The Smartest and Greenest IT winners.

The Quest will culminate at an event highlighting the stories we’ve collected from across Canada, highlight best practices, new ideas, and IT led innovation. Winners of the Smartest IT and Greenest IT will receive awards, will be highlighted in IT World Canada publications such as Computer World Canada, Network World Canada and CIO Canada, and receive the accolades of their peers from across our great nation."

CONFUSING TECH BUZZ WORDS

I'm a big list person (probably from years of watching David Letterman and his top 10) and this one gave me a chuckle.

In the tech field we use a lingo of our own. The writers over at Baseline mag made a list of the most confusing buzzwords of the decade with "SOA" being the most confusing tech buzzword of the decade. (Does anyone really know what SOA means.) "Versioning", "Compliant" and "Web 2.0" also topped the list.

Way, way back I marketed ISDN products. What's ISDN? I Still Don't Know. I actually do but it doesn't matter anymore. Have a read.
